Singer, guitarist and songwriter Russell Morris is an iconic figure in the Australian music scene who has carved an indelible mark with his soulful voice and timeless compositions. He is one of the country’s most enduring artists who embarked on a musical journey in the ‘60s and today continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Russell Morris grew up with a passion for music, joining the band Somebody’s Image as lead vocalist when a teenager. However, it was his solo venture, at the insistence of then road manager, Ian “Molly” Meldrum that truly propelled him into the spotlight. In 1969, Molly worked tirelessly to produce a psychedelic rock masterpiece that became an instant classic. The release of the almost seven minute long, “The Real Thing” marked a pivotal moment in Australian music history and forged Russell Morris’ career ahead. The unconventional song reached number one in Australia and topped the charts in several cities in the US.

Russell navigated various genres after “The Real Thing”, from rock and pop to blues and beyond. His albums, including “Bloodstone” and “Van Diemen’s Land,” showcase a musical evolution that continues to resonate with fans of all ages. Throughout his career, despite many struggles, Russell has garnered multiple awards and accolades, and has solidified his status as a true Australian musical icon.

Although “The Real Thing” remains Russell Morris’s signature hit, his discography boasts a plethora of chart-topping singles, such as “Sweet, Sweet Love,” “Part Three into Paper Walls,” and “Wings of an Eagle.” These songs highlight his song writing brilliance and ability to craft melodies that stand the test of time.

In addition to his solo career, Russell has collaborated with fellow musicians, contributing his distinctive voice to various projects. He has worked with artists like The Bee Gees and Linda Ronstadt as well as with local legends, Ronnie Burns, Darryl Cotton (dec) and Jim Keays (dec). In more recent times Russell has turned his attention to blues music and to working with his friend Rick Springfield. His latest project has seen him working with a 54-piece symphony orchestra to the delight of fans everywhere.

Whether belting out classics or experimenting with new sounds, Russell Morris remains a force to be reckoned with.

He joins us this week to share the remarkable story of his rollercoaster ride to the top.
