From Memphis to Merseyside Ep 13 ‘The Horn Rock Era’

The “dHorn Rock” era is one of the more fascinating periods in the history of rock and roll. Bands like Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire were leading the charge, and here in Canada groups like Blood, Sweat and Tears got in on the action. There are a few reasons why this music took off. In the early 1960s, the first jazz programs started up at American colleges, and many of these musicians were also rock and roll fans, so it only made sense to experiment. Plus, horns were a big part of the Motown sound. However, we think it can really be traced back to The Beatles on their classic 1966 album, ‘Revolver’ and a track called ‘Got to Get You Into My Life’. From the first note, the horn section leaped off the vinyl in a way that was completely different from anything The Beatles had done before, and had a profound impact on the way people thought about rock and roll music. On this episode of From Memphis to Merseyside, we’re featuring some of the best music to come out of the horn rock era.

Happy listening!
