From Memphis to Merseyside Ep 12 ‘Dance Fever’

Ever since Chubby Checker showed us how to do The Twist, dance crazes have been linked to rock and roll music right up through the decades. The Twist was the first dance craze that was popularized by television, and throughout the 1960s new dances like the Mashed Potato, the Watusi, the Swim and the Shimmy had teenagers running to record stores to get the latest singles so that they could practise their moves at home. In the 1970s a vibrant dance club scene morphed into the juggernaut known as disco. Films like Saturday Night Fever brought the music, the clothing and the moves into the mainstream for a few feverish years. On this episode of ‘From Memphis to Merseyside’ we look at some of the dance crazes that swept us all up and made us all move. So, dust off your dancing shoes, pull out your polyester, and join us out on the floor!
